Russia:

Sergei Eisenstein (born in Riga, Russian Empire) adapted John Reed’s Ten Days Which Shook The World in Oktyabr (1928)

Germany:

F. W. Murnau (born Bielefeld, Germany) chose Athena, Oregon to shoot City Girl (1930)

China:

James Wong Howe (born Taishan, Canton Province, China) shot Abe Lincoln In Illinois (1940)  in Eugene

France:

Jacques Tourneur (born Paris, France) adapted Ernest Haycox’ Canyon Passage (1946)
