John Ford’s response when he saw John Wayne’s performance in Howard Hawks’ Red River (1948): “I never knew the big son of a bitch could act!”
Wayne acts up a storm in Rooster Cogburn, made 100% in Oregon locations, and in The Shootist, made the following year. It is all Katherine Hepburn can do to keep up with him. The Far Corner recommends both films unreservedly, but can only certify one as an Oregon film.
