The Great Race, Oregon Style

January 23rd, 2009 by Anne Richardson · No Comments · 1960's, Oregon writer, Side Notes

Sure, Blake Edwards included an Oregon beach in his Around The World In 80 Days style movie extravaganza The Great Race (1965). The more important road trip, however, from the point of view of Oregon history, happened the year before when Ken Kesey decided to drive a school bus across the US with a few friends. Kesey had just published his second novel, Sometimes A Great Notion, and was on his way to a book party in New York.

Fellow Merry Prankster Paula Sundstren was on her way to swim at the New York World’s Fair. Here’s what Paula was wearing that year.

According to Paula, the male Pranksters at that date were still in button down shirts and crew cuts. Photographic evidence backs her up. Here’s Kesey during that time period.
