Uli Edel/Oregon filmmaker

April 6th, 2010 by Anne Richardson · No Comments · Oregon filmmaker

Uli Edel came to Portland to shoot his career nadir, Body of Evidence, in 1993. Undaunted by its six Razzie awards, a critical slap  counterbalanced by the acclaim he won for Last Exit In Brooklyn in 1989, Edel continued making reliably odd movies, with occasional forays into television mini-series.

A meditation on European directors transitioning to Hollywood:

In 1923, Mary Pickford imported Ernst Lubitsch to direct her in Rosita. I include this information because it may be the only time you see in print a comparison of Madonna and Mary Pickford.

Marlene Dietrich offers her theory why ringleted Phenomenal Blonde Superstars ended up being directed by Germans.

Uli Edel’s most recent film, Der Baader Meinhof Complex (2008), was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
