Did Harry Smith invent hand painted film? This is a frame from Early Abstractions, which Smith first finished in 1947, and kept finishing for some years following. Harry Smith was born in Portland, but grew up in Washington State.

From the Northwest Film Center:

NEW – Hand Painted Film Society
Second Wednesdays, February 9, March 9, April 13, and May 11, 6-10 p.m.
School of Film, 934 SW Salmon

Get out the inks and paintbrushes! 16mm celluloid is a canvas waiting to happen. This is a chance to convene and create with a group of like-minded disciples of the Direct Animation movement. The drop-in fee covers use of 16mm leader, markers, paints, brushes, projectors, splicers, and a School of Film classroom. Paint and scratch away during the time allotted. In June, there will be a free public screening of the Society’s works. No previous experience or pre-registration needed.

DROP-IN FEE: $10
